Connecting with the next generation at the University of Auckland Science Majors Expo

WWLA recently joined the University of Auckland’s first Science Majors Expo, giving students an opportunity to explore where their studies could take them and learn more about careers in our industry.

The expo brought together undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the university’s science programmes. Students could speak directly with professionals and discover how their chosen majors connect with real-world roles.

The informal format made it easy to have meaningful conversations about day-to-day work, career pathways and the opportunities available after graduation. For students, it was a practical way to see how their degree could translate into a career.

Representing WWLA were Raffe Mahon, who spoke about contaminated land, and Brooke James, who shared insights into water resources. They connected with students from across the science programmes and shared how a science degree can open the door to a wide range of career paths.  For Raffe, the event also highlighted the value of making career options visible early. When he was at university, he did not know that contaminated land was a potential career path, so it was great to make students aware of that option and what it involved. Hopefully igniting some interest for the next generation.
