On 13 November 2025, WWLA Principal Contaminated Land Advisors Wendi Williamson and Shane Moore co-hosted the Auckland ALGA Walking Tour of legacy projects through Auckland’s vibrant Wynyard Quarter starting with the sun shining at Victoria Park and ending at Wynyard Pier.
The tour highlighted the transformative projects and developments that have turned one of Auckland’s most historically contaminated industrial areas into a thriving hub of culture and business.
Drawing on their extensive 25+ years experience, Wendi and Shane shared of work in the area, starting with the decommissioning of the 'Auckland Gas Company' Gasworks in St Marys Bay, before moving on to the challenges faced during the Victoria Park Tunnel project, and concluding with highlights and challenges faced during the many remediation and development initiatives undertaken throughout Wynyard Quarter. This included projects for Orams Marine, Auckland Council Development Entities, BP, Shell, Viaduct Harbour Holdings, Beaumont Developments, Mansons and many more. It included remediation of several hydrocarbon and chemical storage facilities, court cases where expert evidence was required, and responding to unexpected contamination during complex construction projects.
Joining them were Andrew Kalbarczyk (Auckland Council), Phil Ware (BECA), and Chris Bailey (Tonkin & Taylor), each bringing a wealth of expertise and personal stories from their own involvements in the complex and successful redevelopment projects across Wynyard Quarter. Phil concluded with a walk along Wynyard Pier and an engaging discussion on the future plans for the precinct.
The evening was wrapped up with a few drinks and dinner at a local bar, with plenty of opportunity to network and continue the conversation.
